What three qualities do you look for in a partner?
Submitted by Tenor Bob
First, he's SMART. Bare minimum, he's at least as smart as i am, and i'm pretty fucking smart. But he's probably smarter. I don't want to get nitpicky and suggest he must be top of his class and have degrees etc. I know lots of smart people who cannot claim those things.. The key is KNOWING stuff... reading, watching, observing, critical thinking, even a tendency toward debate just for the sake of debate. Extra points if he's smart in things I'm not smart about, like how many teaspoons in a gallon, or what the conflict in the middle East is all about. In addition to a general smartypants, he's smart about 'things'. rational, sensible. Knows how to read a map. Logical about decisionmaking and good with money and priorities. Has a great memory, and lots of attention to detail. Smart. you know?
Second, he has PASSION. about me, about life, about SOMETHING. I don't care what it is, music, math, horror films.. as long as it's not racism or heroin, I'm on board. I want to be around someone who inspires me to throw myself into my own projects, to improve myself. I want to be around someone who gets really excited about something and is willing to take incredible risks to make incredible gains. I want someone who has wanted something so badly that it hurts, and who's not afraid to experience that kind of pain in pursuit of a goal. I want to be with someone who finds beauty and perfection is something just because it's sacred to him, and not because it's hip or simply available. I want someone who can say, 'i do this' or 'i am this', without shame or embarassment, and with conviction.
Third, he's STRONG .. of character. He knows himself and his strengths and limitations, and he won't let me or anyone bully him. He does what he believes no matter what anyone else thinks, or what's popular. He never goes with the crowd just because it's the crowd. He stands up to me, because sometimes i'm a little overbearing, without worrying about hurting my feelings. He's unique, and he won't give in easily to temptation (for example the throngs of women who are probably throwing themselves at him daily). he's okay with who he is, and who i am, and willing to defend us both. He's secure, and not jealous of people or circumstance, and not out to prove himself to anyone. He alone owns himself-- he's responsible for his actions, avoids whining, and is flexible enough to make changes when it's obvious they need to be made. He's in charge of his destiny.
Over the years I've come up with a dozen of these lists.. Only in the last couple years did I finally figure it out.. I can't have a relationship with someone I can't respect, for whatever (fair or unfair) reason I can't respect them. The above are good ways to get my respect. There are a couple others, but these would get someone in the door, if i were in the market for a new man, or even in the market for some new lifelong friends. That's not to say i can't have dumb friends, or weak friends.. but the best relationships I have are with people I admire deeply, people who make me want to become like them, and really whom i consider too good for me, if we're being honest. totally deserving of the pedestals I keep them on.
I should also point out that my boyfriend meets all of these criteria, and one other: He loves the crap out of me*. There's probably another question-of-the-day to come, about how you know when someone loves you. It's a different list, but he's done it, and keeps doing it.
*in spite of me.

How are you spending this Memorial Day? How will it differ from Memorial Days past?
I watched six episodes of House (season three). I had some fizzy water and some green beans. I suspect later I'll vacuum.
This is different because of course the last few years I've had wood floors.

hmmm what does this say about me?
in no particular order:
You Oughtta Know - alanis morrissette
Miss Independent - Kelly Clarkson
Limp - Fiona Apple
Fighter - Christina Aguilera
Danny's song - Loggins and Messina
What compliment are you most often given?
Hmmm well it depends on whom you ask..
Swing dancers generally think 1) I'm a good dancer, and 2) I have a nice ass. There's a component of swing dancing which benefits from 'ass', so these go hand in hand. For dancing, the ass works out great, however in sitting or standing, bathing-suiting, or trying-to-look-cool-in-a-bar situations, my ass is generally better suited for a woman about 5 inches taller than I am. But you know, potato-potato.
Friends generally think I'm 'sweet', but this is because I send a lot of unexpected notes and cards that I'm thinking of them. I'm also pretty good with myspace comments. Strangely, a lot of these same friends would say I'm a 'fantastic bitch' (and they mean this in a nice way). I think it's because I have a knack for shittalking. And timing. It was all those rhetoric classes, I swear.
According to my parents, I'm the shit. I can do absolutely -no- wrong. I'm smart, beautiful, loving, a good driver, and a wonderful example for young people. I can also make a good gin and tonic. Witness:
