Iphone!!! zomg!!!1!

You're not the only one on earth who doesn't care. Even in the relatively small tech community, there's a very large group of "whatever, that exists already for cheaper, you're such a sheep to Apple" types.

But this device really is a big step forward.
The fact that they partnered with Cingular may well doom the iPhone to the same fate as the Newton. I can tell you from firsthand experience that Cingular's data network sssssssssssuuuuuuuuccccccccccckkkks. Have you looked at the specs on EDGE? Here's a choice quote from Wikipedia:

"With EDGE the actual packet data rates can reach around 180 kbit/s (effective)."

We're averaging download speeds of 400-700 kbit/s* with EVDO Rev. 0, and Rev. A is being rolled out as we speak... and it is quite capable of video phone calls. I'm not worried.

* official (and verified) marketing data; EVDO in theory can hit 1.5mbit
awesome. i love cingular for their GSM technology, and Apple for the hippie and lesbian friendliness, but now that I know verizon's broadband speed, i'm SOLD, and everyone here should be too.

Verizon Wireless. It's the network.
Can I punch him? Please?
[this is good]
dude if you try couscous with baileys and don't love it, then yes, you can deck me as hard as you want.
If you're eating couscous and Bailey's I don't need to hit you... that shit's worse than humble pie.

Ever had a chickensicle?
But the tricksy little hobbitses . . . I mean, iPhone, will switch over to Wi-Fi if it detects it. Isn't SFO planning muni Wi-Fi? Several places are, or already have it.

Anyway, that mitigates the network speed (and network costs) for downloading over Cingular (or anyone else's network for that matter).
we don't live in SF. Not everyone does. there are actually one or two other attractions/places to live in nor cal, besides SF. Imagine!!

;-)
Yes, but it's close enough. San Jose has MetroFi. Some other nearby cities have similar "free"-ish Wi-Fi networks. I'm generalizing. The point was that the iPhone isn't limited to sucking at Cingular's network teat, as it were.
woops

Apple Newton v.2.0. Mark my words.
That's what Sony said about the PSP. On the other hand, the PSP is facing some hurdles as well, so maybe that's not the best evidence.

irony: that you two are discussing gadget geekdom on my blog about how gadget geeky i'm not.

but i like having you here :)

Yes! I agree wholeheartedly. My Erricson T610 will be with me until it explodes the way my old Motorola did after five years of faithful service. And that's the way I like it, gaddammit!
